Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming journalism globally, with significant implications for content production, newsroom operations, and editorial processes. In Malaysia, the integration of AI into journalism remains in its early stages, influenced by technological advancement, evolving policy frameworks, and ongoing ethical debates. This study examines Malaysia’s readiness for AI adoption in the journalism sector by analysing global trends, regional developments in Southeast Asia, and the national context. Using a qualitative methodology that combines literature review and semi-structured interviews with media professionals, the research investigates levels of awareness, perceived benefits and limitations, and policy and ethical considerations. The researcher interviewed a total of twelve interviewees with multi news agencies. Findings revealed that the awareness of using AI tools is high level among the journalists, the journalists acknowledge the benefits and limitations of using AI tool in their journalism field, however, challenges persist, including limited training, ethical uncertainties, and the absence of sector-specific regulatory guidance. The study concludes by recommending a collaborative, ethically grounded framework involving policymakers, media institutions, and academic bodies to support responsible AI integration and ensure the sustainability of journalism in Malaysia’s digital transformation.
